RBT Preference Assessments
Updated October 27, 2026
A preference assessment finds out which items or activities a client likes most, so they can be used as reinforcers. RBTs often run these as directed by a supervisor, and they’re part of the Behavior Assessment content area on the RBT exam. Here are the main types, followed by free practice questions.
Types of preference assessments
| Type | How it works |
|---|---|
| Free operant | The client has free access to several items; you record how long they spend with each |
| Single stimulus | One item is presented at a time; you record whether the client approaches or engages with it |
| Paired stimulus (paired choice) | Two items are presented together; the client chooses one, and every item is paired with every other |
| Multiple stimulus with replacement | Several items are presented; after a choice, the chosen item is put back and the array is shown again |
| Multiple stimulus without replacement (MSWO) | Several items are presented; after a choice, that item is removed, and the client chooses from what’s left |
Why it matters
- What a client likes changes over time, so preference assessments are repeated regularly, often before sessions.
- A preferred item isn’t always a reinforcer. An item is a reinforcer only if it increases the behavior it follows.
