About the RBT exam

Who takes the RBT exam?

People who want to work as Registered Behavior Technicians, usually delivering ABA services to clients under a supervisor's direction. To apply, you must be at least 18, have a high school education or the equivalent, pass a criminal background check and an abuse registry check, complete a 40-hour training that meets the BACB's 2026 requirements, and then pass the RBT Initial Competency Assessment.

How is the RBT exam structured?

It has 85 multiple-choice questions, 75 scored and 10 unscored, and you have 90 minutes. Each question has 4 choices and one correct answer. Since January 1, 2026, it follows the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.): Data Collection and Graphing (13 questions), Behavior Assessment (8), Behavior Acquisition (19), Behavior Reduction (14), Documentation and Reporting (10) and Ethics (11). The exam is given only in English.

What score do I need to pass?

The exam is pass/fail, and you get your result at the test center. The BACB sets the passing score with a panel of experts (the modified Angoff method) and does not publish it as a percentage. Our practice exams use 80% correct (60 of 75) as a benchmark. Aim higher than that before your test day.

Where do I take it, and what if I fail?

You take it in person at a Pearson VUE test center in a country the BACB approves, such as the United States. Pearson VUE charges $45 for each appointment, on top of the BACB application fee. You can take the exam up to 8 times within 12 months of your application approval, waiting at least 7 days between attempts. Check the BACB's RBT Handbook for current fees and rules.

Which ethics rules do your questions follow?

Our ethics questions follow the RBT Ethics Code (2.0), which the Ethics content area of the exam is based on, along with the supervision requirements in the BACB's RBT Handbook. Always follow your supervisor's direction, your employer's policies and the law in practice.

Is this the official exam?

No. This is practice material to help you prepare. The RBT exam is developed by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) and given at Pearson VUE test centers. This site is not affiliated with the BACB or Pearson VUE.
